John Brock is a non professional boxer in his 40s. Crumpled face, rough hands and prominent cheekbones, it's the kind of face you'd want on your side to fight, but not on the other side to face you.
John is a man who doesn't stand out in society, in fact, he's even reserved and quiet, which makes him even less sociable by modern standards. Although to be fair to him, anyone who knows him knows that he would literally lose blood for friendship.
He tried his hand at boxing after giving up the literary life because he couldn't fit in with the artistic world. Despite all his rough ways, he is a familiar with Virgil and Homer: "Fortune favors the bold" is his motto. Unfortunately, he didn't have much success in boxing either, he took a lot of beatings and lost a lot, but it was amazing how, despite everything, he stayed on his feet until the final round, sweaty, exhausted, bleeding and fighting.
